KONE wins an order for Heathrow Terminal 2 extension

Press Release Published 01/09/2011

KONE has been awarded an order to supply 40 elevators, 18 escalators and 12 autowalks to the satellite building T2B of Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 2. Once the project is completed, these KONE solutions will aid the smooth and efficient flow of an estimated 20 million passengers per year in the terminals.

Altogether, KONE will install a total of 34 KONE MonoSpace® elevators, six KONE Motala™ platform elevators, which will improve accessibility for people with impaired mobility. The order also includes 8 KONE TravelMaster™ 110 light duty escalators plus 10 KONE TransitMaster™ 140 heavy duty escalators. In addition to this are 12 autowalks, which will also contribute to simpler and smoother passenger journeys in the satellite building.

The KONE MonoSpace® elevators come equipped with energy efficient KONE EcoDisc® hoisting machines and regenerative drives. This will help the terminal in significantly improving its carbon efficiency.

“We are delighted to have been chosen by Balfour Beatty to collaborate on another project at Heathrow. We are proud to contribute to smooth People Flow™ at one of the world’s busiest airports with our innovative and energy-efficient solutions,” says Michael Williams, Managing Director of KONE UK.

KONE has worked at Heathrow, which is operated by BAA, for more than a decade and has recently delivered a successful handover at T5C, the second satellite building at Terminal 5. The new Terminal 2B will open to passengers in 2014.

The order was booked in Q2 of 2011.
