Stay on Corporate siteKONE has won the contract to supply 30 elevators for the third in the series of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd’s “Freedom Class” ships.
The order is the largest elevator contract ever booked by KONE for a single ship. AKER Finnyards, which is one of the world’s leading designers and builders of cruise ships, passenger ferries and other technically advanced vessels, is building the ship for Royal Caribbean.
The two “Freedom Class” ships presently under construction are also to be equipped with KONE elevators. The first ship, Freedom of the Seas, will be delivered in the spring of 2006 and its sister ship a year later. These three ships will be the largest passenger cruise ships ever built at 339 meters long and 18 decks high. At full occupancy, the new ship will carry 3,600 guests and a crew of 1,400. The delivery of the KONE elevators is scheduled for 2007.
KONE significantly strengthened its position in marine elevator and escalators business when it acquired the marine elevator business of MacGREGOR in March, 2005 and is now the global market and technology leader in this field.
